POLITICS | Signs of life from Fidel. On 18 October the Communist publication Granma published a letter from former president Fidel Castro (1959-2008) to students. The letter, which was dated the previous day, was the first reported sign of life from the former leader since widespread rumours, that emerged the previous week, that he was on his death-bed. Fidel, who turned 86 in August, has not been seen or heard from in several months, with the last of his Reflections published on 19 June.
