TRACKING TRENDS

CURAÇAO | New government. The ruling coalition regained a majority in legislative elections on 19 October. Elections were triggered by the resignation of prime minister Gerrit Schotte after the ruling coalition comprising his Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK), Pueblo Soberano (PS) and Partido Movishon Antia Nobo (MAN) lost its majority [WR-12-38]. The coalition remained intact, albeit this time led by the PS, which received the most votes. With more than 87,000 of the 104,000 eligible voters participating - the largest voter turnout in recent history - the coalition won 12 of the 21 seats, one more than in the previous 2010 elections. Of these, the PS, which is led by the leftist Helmin Wiels, took five seats; Schotte’s MFK also took five seats; and the MAN came fifth with two seats. The biggest loser was the conservative Partido Alternativa Real (PAR), of former prime minister Emily de Jongh-Elhage (2006-2010), which saw its presence shrink to four seats from eight.
