“Comrade Chávez must start to prepare the succession”

Two prominent left-wing statesmen have extolled the virtues of alternation of power for a healthy democracy. Brazil’s former president Lula da Silva (2003-2010) described alternation of power as “a conquest of humanity [that] we must maintain”. He also called directly on Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez to “start to prepare the succession”. Uruguay’s President José Mujica, speaking more elliptically, said that “the best fighters are not those that do most, but those who know when to let someone succeed them.”
