FOREIGN RELATIONS & SECURITY | Obama breaks silence on Colombia-Farc talks. In a 29 October radio interview with La W, which also airs in the US, President Barack Obama spoke about the new peace talks between the government led by President Juan Manuel Santos and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). Obama stated: “My hope is that we can create a peaceful Colombia and that the Farc will lay down their arms and recognize that, even though they disagree with the government, they should take part in the political process instead of resorting to violence”. Obama also recognised that the US plays an important role in incentivising narco trafficking and promised that if re-elected on 6 November, he would work towards “lowering consumption” in the biggest drug market by value in the world.
