Mujica favours abortion referendum. On 29 October in Punta del Este President José Mujica said that the debate on the recent
legalisation of abortion in the country “should be resolved with the vote of the people; it’s an issue of conscience that each one must resolve in private”. Mujica
promulgated the law approved by congress because he said it provided a better solution than the status quo; the opposition Partido Nacional has launched a campaign to collect signatures to call a binding referendum.
