It was a day that would have tested the most battle-hardened politician. Not only did the mayor of Lima, Susana Villarán de la Puente, have to wrestle with the fallout from a botched police operation to clear a street market in the capital, which left two dead and dozens injured, but she was also on the receiving end of the news that she could face a recall referendum, as soon as July next year. The day was Thursday 25 October. Two days later, as if to prove the old adage that a week is a long time in politics, her prospects looked much brighter.
