Controversy surrounds Uribe's possible re-election

Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe announced this week that he would withdraw from congress the popular petition to reform the constitution to allow him to seek a third consecutive term in power if it was providing an “obstacle" to important political and judicial reform bills sent by the executive. His comment led to speculation in the press that he might not seek re-election in 2010. The opposition argued that Uribe knew full well that he could not legally withdraw the popular petition, signed by 4m Colombians, and that congress would have to consider it.
