Opposition goes after Fernández. On 7 November the president of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado, said that the former president, Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012), must answer to accusations made against him and some of his government officials for the mismanagement of public funds leading to direct responsibility for the Dominican Republic (DR)’s RD$187bn (US$4.6bn) fiscal deficit. A day earlier (6 November), Guillermo Moreno, the leader of another opposition party, Partido Alianza País (PAP), presented a formal complaint against Fernández, accusing the former administration of having spent US$1bn on the election campaign of Fernández’s successor, Danilo Medina, who like Fernández hails from the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). The PLD contends that Moreno’s accusations are unfounded and politically motivated. PLD’s secretary general, Reinaldo Pared Pérez, claims that the intention is to disqualify Fernández from holding public office in the future. Vargas Maldonado argues that the PAP is exercising its right and that all public officials should be open to scrutiny. The DR’s attorney general, Franciso Domínguez Britto, a PLD member who retained his post in the new government, is expected to throw out the case.
