In Brief - Turks & Caicos

POLITICS | Recount for Turks & Caicos. The initial result of the 9 November general election in the Turks & Caicos (pop. 39,100 as of 2011), a British Overseas Territory, was to return the Progressive National Party (PNP) to power, following three years of direct rule from the UK, by the margin of 8-7 seats over the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM).  Under its leader, Dr Rufus Ewing, the PNP looks to have secured six of the 10 electoral districts and two of the five “At Large” seats.  However, a recount will take place today (12 November) of the “At Large” votes at the request of opposition leader Oswald Skippings.  It is also possible that Akierra Missick, who won the Leeward Provo seat for the PNP by just 32 votes, may face disqualification on the grounds of holding US citizenship. In addition to the 15 contested seats in the House of Assembly, a further four will be appointed by the governor, two on the nomination of the premier and two at the bequest of the opposition.
