In Brief- Paraguay

FOREIGN RELATIONS | Colombia and Chile send ambassadors back to Asunción. On 11 November as previously announced, the Colombian and Chilean ambassadors to Paraguay, Jorge Barrantes and Cristian Maquieira, respectively, arrived in Asunción after they were re-deployed by their respective governments. Like all the other members of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), Colombia and Chile recalled their ambassadors for consultation following the impeachment of former president Fernando Lugo (2008-2012). Unasur has refused to recognise the new Paraguayan government now led by President Federico Franco and formally cut off diplomatic relations with Paraguay. However, the Franco government has been lobbying its neighbours to re-establish normal diplomatic relations. The return of the ambassadors, who were received at the airport by the president of Paraguayan senate’s foreign commission, Miguel Carrizosa, is the first sign that these two Unasur members may be open to revising their current stance on Paraguay, which could create a division on the issue within the regional bloc.
