Obama wins Florida

Guatemala: On 10 November, during a press conference at the national coordinator for disaster reduction (Conred), President Otto Pérez Molina announced that he had formally requested US President Barack Obama to suspend the deportation of Guatemalan nationals following the recent earthquakes that hit the country. He also called on the US to grant Guatemala Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a benefit granted to countries that have suffered natural disasters or civil wars, allowing undocumented migrants to remain temporarily in the US with a work permit. So far the US has granted TPS only to El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. According to information from the Guatemala migration authorities, deportations of Guatemalan nationals from the US are up 14% this year, taking the current total to 35,196 people by air and 33,765 people by land.
