POLITICS| Medina leaves as protests continue. On 14 November President Danilo Medina travelled to Spain to attend an Ibero-American summit in Cádiz despite continuing widespread protests against his recently approved fiscal reform. The political opposition led by the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) is seeking to capitalise on the discontent, accusing Medina’s Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) and, in particular, the previous governments led by former president, Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012), of being responsible for the DR’s current fiscal deficit which led the new administration to seek tax increases that “punish” the general population in order to clean-up the mess they had left behind.  Yesterday, there were reports of demonstrations not only across the DR but also abroad, in the US, where protests took place outside the embassy. While protests were largely peaceful, violence did break out in the Dominican city of San Francisco de Macorís, where police officer, Robinson Morillo, was wounded by a bullet during efforts to disperse protestors.
