Taking the ass out of the assembly. On the 15 November deadline to register candidates for Ecuador’s 17 February general elections, a group of Guayaquil residents attempted to register a tie-clad donkey,‘Don Burro’, as a candidate for the legislative elections. Daniel Molina, Don Burro’s campaign chief, said: “We want to remind people to examine their conscience; that the vote to the [national] assembly is something very serious, we need to become aware of this and choose those who will legislate and know what they are doing. We don’t want to be detrimental to any candidate or political party”. The provincial electoral council of Guayaquil, however, refused Don Burro’s entry to the building and rejected his candidacy.
