Uncertainty in Turks & Caicos. The 8:7 seat victory of the Progressive National Party (PNP) in the 9 November Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) general election is under threat because of a legal challenge to the result in Electoral District 7, ostensibly won by the PNP candidate, Amanda Missick. The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM)’s challenge for a re-run of the election in Electoral District 7 is based on the alleged ineligibility of the Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP) candidate, Edward Smith, on the grounds of his US citizenship. Smith gained 58 votes in a contest that was won by the PNP candidate by just 30 votes. A similar situation arose in 2003, when a successful challenge to the outcome in one constituency by the PNP led to a by-election, which it won, thereby enabling the PNP to form the government.
