Franco government “appreciates” positive view from Unasur emissary. On 25 November Paraguay’s foreign minister, José Félix Fernández Estigarribia, said that he “appreciated” the positive remarks made by the head of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur)’s high-level group analysing the political situation in Paraguay, Salomón Lerner Ghitis, following his informal visit to the country. Lerner Ghitis arrived in Asunción on 22 November after receiving an invitation from Paraguay’s supreme electoral tribunal (TSJE) (but not by the government led by President
Federico Franco). After holding a series of meetings with various political actors, Lerner Ghitis gave a press conference on 23 November in which he said that he was leaving Paraguay with a “positive view” of the current situation in the country. He said he would convey this in the report he is due to present to the Unasur high level group which is scheduled to meet at the next Unasur summit in Lima, Peru on 30 November. Fernández Estigarrbia said that Lerner Ghitis’ comments had been well received by the government which now hoped that Paraguay’s suspension from Unasur would be lifted at the next summit.
