ECUADOR: Shrimp sales surge

Shrimp exports came to US$885m in the first eight months of 2012, according to Ecuador’s national aquaculture chamber (CNA), breaking the US$875m export record registered all the way in 1998, before the fatal outbreak of white spot disease. The CNA president, José Antonio Camposano, noted that the sector has had to nearly double export volumes to break its historical sales record: 252m pounds of shrimp were sold in 1998, but forecast sales in 2012 are 400m pounds.
