MEXICO: Carstens comes under pressure

The renewed slide in the peso against the US dollar on 21 October (and the fall in oil prices) will put more pressure on the government's economic assumptions about 2009. It is disconcerting how unsteady the hitherto impressive finance minister, Agustí­n Carstens, has been in the crisis. It is also significant that President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa did not endorse some of the strong statements made by Carstens.
