COLOMBIA: Kidnapping belies Farc denial of divisions

“There are no divisions, nor anything resembling them.” This assessment of internal harmony within the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) was given by none other than the leader of the group, Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri (‘Timochenko’), in an interview with the Communist weekly Voz. However, the kidnapping of two police officers in the south-western department of Valle del Cauca on 25 January emphatically undermined the call by the Farc’s negotiating team in Havana for a bilateral ceasefire and raised questions as to whether all of the group’s constituent ‘fronts’ are behind the peace talks.
