The most striking aspect of the campaign manifestoes of the presidential candidates who are competing in next February’s elections is not what they are promising to do but what none of them are saying they will do: drill for oil in the Yasuní national park. This is an acknowledgement by the candidates, who represent parties from across the political spectrum, that the Yasuní scheme, which seeks global finance for keeping oil in the ground in a pristine wilderness, has become a cause of national pride.
