MEXICO-US | Big step forward on immigration. On 28 January a bipartisan group of eight US senators announced that they had reached agreement on a framework agreement on migration reform. This would halt deportations and grant illegal immigrants provisional authorisation to live and work in the US, as a first step towards obtaining a green card and, eventually, US citizenship, the agreement balances this with a call for strengthening border controls, improving the monitoring of visitors and sanctioning those who hire undocumented workers. This outline for a possible immigration bill reflects a new willingness by mainstream Republicans to compromise following their party’s defeat in November, when President Barack Obama got strong backing from Latino voters.
