BOLIVIA | Back in the Single Convention. On 11 January Bolivia was automatically readmitted to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961 with a reservation on the prohibition of coca chewing (a traditional practice known as acullicu or pijcheo). This happened when only 15 countries objected to its readmission, 47 fewer than the number required to block its readmission. Only three Western Hemisphere countries were among the objectors: the US, Canada and Mexico. Bolivia had withdrawn from the convention in January 2012 and followed up with an application for readmission with the acullicu reservation. The readmission becomes effective on 10 February.
