Correa moves against Repsol. Fresh from ordering the Brazilian firm Odebrecht to leave Ecuador, President Rafael Correa this week said he was expelling the Spanish-Argentine oil company Repsol-YPF. Correa said he had been forced to take action because Repsol had “wasted some eight months of our time" by refusing to 'migrate' from its operating contract to a service contract. He issued a similar threat to Brazil's state oil company Petrobras recently, but differences were ironed out this week when Petrobras signed a one-year transition contract. The Spanish government is hopeful that such a compromise can be reached with Repsol. The company has the support of the Nawe indigenous community, which has appealed to Correa not to expel it. The Nawe sent a letter to Correa saying that Amazonian indigenous groups had received good treatment at the hands of Repsol, which it said was the only company to assist the Nawe with medical services and education.
