Few doubted President Rafael Correa would win, handsomely, a third term in office. The most notable aspect of the elections, however, was the triumph of Correa’s Alianza País in the unicameral legislature. Preliminary results show it won at least 90 of 137 seats, giving the party a two-thirds majority. Not since the return to democracy in 1979 has a single political party held a legislative majority. The victory prompted Correa to promise to accelerate his “citizen’s revolution”, which may involve altering the constitution to allow indefinite re-election.
