The sudden death in a helicopter accident of (ret.) General Lino César Oviedo Silva, the historic leader of Paraguay’s third largest political party, Unión Nacional de Ciudadanos Eticos (Unace), moved the country and shocked the political arena ahead of the scheduled 21 April general election. The electoral panorama looks unchanged by the incident. Oviedo’s death temporarily opened a window of opportunity for the ruling Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA) to place itself in an unbeatable position ahead of election, by forging an alliance with the Unace. The PLRA tried to capitalise on the opportunity, but failed to pull it off.
