ARGENTINA: AMIA deal forced through

With the argument, essentially, that something is better than nothing, congress approved the government’s Memorandum of Understanding with Iran over the bombing of the Amia Jewish association. Despite angry and vocal criticism of the deal from all opposition legislators, Argentina’s two main Jewish associations and the private media, the agreement now awaits only President Cristina Fernandez’s signature to go ahead. Plus, of course, the approval of the Iranian parliament. The agreement will, in principle, allow Argentine federal judges to travel to Tehran to question five Iranian nationals accused of planning the bombing, for whom at Argentina’s request Interpol had issued red notices (arrest warrants) in 2007.
