In Brief - Peru

SECURITY|  Artemio’s presumed security chief captured. On 26 March Peru’s national police criminal investigations unit (Dirincri) announced the arrest of Cuarto ‘Jaime’ Chujandama Pinedo, believed to be a  member of the insurgent group Sendero Luminoso (SL). According to a Dirincri statement, Chujandama, who was arrested near the town of Sión in San Martín Region, was the head of security for the imprisoned leader of the SL faction operating in the Upper Huallaga Valley, ‘Camarada Artemio’ (Florindo Flores Eleuterio Hala), who is currently on trial for terrorism and drug trafficking charges.  Chujandama will be transferred to the Callao military base, where he will await trial. His arrest opens the possibility that he may be called upon as a witness in the ongoing Artemio trial. Today (27 March), another prominent SL member, Oscar Ramírez Durand, is scheduled to give testimony.
