In Brief - Argentina

POLITICS| Goye mandate recalled. On 7 April the government-allied Peronist mayor of San Carlos de Bariloche, Omar Goye, was ousted in a recall referendum. According to the provisional results (65% of the count), at least 77% of those voters that cast their ballots were in favour of recalling the mayor. Goye was suspended in January, after lootings in Bariloche in December 2012 amidst power outages in the city. Goye was accused by the local opposition of negligence in failing to order the local police force to act more swiftly on the looters. The Río Negro governor, Alberto Weretilneck, also a Peronist, yesterday said that following Goye’s removal the city authorities must call elections for a new mayor within 60 days.
