MEXICO: Spread of ‘community police’ as a new threat

The rapid spread of ‘community police’ groups across much of the country has been greeted with sympathy, even support, from a majority of Mexicans, but has also spread alarm, particularly in officialdom and among a number of analysts, who fear that it may, at the very least, become an obstacle to one of the main aims of President Enrique Peña Nieto’s public security strategy — and at worst breed a new security threat.
