DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Barrick agrees to negotiate

After months of intense political and public pressure, Canadian mining firm, Barrick Gold Corp., has agreed to renegotiate its concession for the Pueblo Viejo mine, the Dominican Republic (DR)’s main gold mine. This is a key victory for the government of President Danilo Medina, enabling it to secure better terms and resolve an issue that has become a national cause. Yet Medina remains under pressure to deliver an outcome acceptable to the public, or else he could face widespread discontent.
