TRINIDAD & TOBAGO-REGION: Xi arrives after “brutal” Biden talks

First US Vice-President Joe Biden then Chinese President Xi Jinping. For a few days Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and other Caribbean Community (Caricom) heads of government are dining at the top table of global diplomacy in Port of Spain. Trade, immigration and security dominated Biden’s visit. He described discussions with Persad-Bissessar and her Caricom peers as “open” and “frank”. She opted for a more emotive adjective: “brutal”. Contentious issues such as immigration and security will not plague Xi’s visit, part of a mini-tour of the region (like Biden’s) ending in the US, which will focus on trade and investment.
