TRACKING TRENDS

CAYMAN ISLANDS | Opposition wins. The opposition People’s Progressive Movement (PPM), led by attorney Alden McLaughlin, won the legislative elections on 22 May. The PPM took nine out of 18 seats, leaving it just one short of a majority. Former prime minister McKeeva Bush (2009-2012), whose arrest in December 2012 on corruption charges resulted in his removal following a no confidence vote, retained his legislative seat in West Bay. However, the split of Bush’s United Democratic Party (UDP) after his arrest, in which five members left to form a minority government, was reflected in its poor performance: the UDP took just four seats, with independents taking the other five.
