TRACKING TRENDS

MEXICO | Telecoms sector continues to grow. On 27 May Mexico’s federal telecommunications commission (Cofetel) reported that the size of the country’s telecommunications sector increased by 12.5% in the first quarter of the year. Cofetel pointed out that the sector’s growth during the period was much higher than the country’s GDP growth (0.8%), which led Cofetel to note in a statement that the sector “is consolidating itself as one of the sectors that is driving the country’s [economic] growth”. According to Cofetel, growth in the sector was led by increases in the satellite TV, mobile phone and long-distance phone services, although virtually all sectors posted positive figures. This as growth in satellite TV subscriptions increased by 20.9% to 7.1m by the end of March, “consolidating itself as the main access point to Mexico’s paid TV market”.
