No sooner had representatives of the government and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) struck the first accord in the peace process taking place in Cuba than there was an unexpected twist. The government of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, who had publicly celebrated progress in the process after a deal on land reform was struck on 26 May, recalled his representative at the Havana talks, Roy Chaderton, three days later to “evaluate” his continued participation.
