MEXICO: Federal contingent deployed in Michoacán

The federal government decided it had to intervene in Michoacán to contain the critical situation created by the confrontation between the ‘self-defence’ groups and Los Caballeros Templarios (LCT), a splinter of La Familia Michoacana — in which a third party, the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) appears to have become involved [SSR-13-04]. Initial actions by the military and the federal police targeted the ‘self-defence’ groups, apparently confining themselves to preventing them from bearing arms.
