HONDURAS: Street gangs announce a truce of sorts

Following the mediation efforts of San Pedro Sula’s auxiliary bishop Rómulo Emiliani, Honduras’s two main maras (street gangs) have announced a ‘truce’ that has been widely portrayed as mirroring the one agreed by their counterparts in neighbouring El Salvador in March 2012, but which differs substantially from it.  Emiliani described it more accurately as an intention ‘to reconcile with the government and society [and] seek peace.’
