EL SALVADOR: Court forces dismissal of top security officials

A ruling by the constitutional chamber of the supreme court has forced President Mauricio Funes to replace justice & security minister, David Munguía Payés, and national police chief, Francisco Salinas, on the grounds that their status as retired army generals was an impediment to holding public security posts. Funes has said the court’s decision was political and that he feared it would deliver a ‘second blow’ invalidating the use of troops in support of the police.
