MEXICO: Mutual accusations of foul play mar elections

Mexico’s two main opposition parties are accusing governors from the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) of abuse of power ahead of crucial state and municipal elections on 7 July. This visceral suspicion of the PRI, whose long monopoly on power was perpetuated by electoral skulduggery, is putting strain on the cross-party Pact for Mexico, which might not survive serious electoral setbacks by the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD). The PRI is retaliating by accusing both parties, especially the PAN, of double standards. An increase in political violence is providing a sinister backdrop to this political wrangling.
