Farc hostage release could mark shift in strategy to urban bombings

The Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) released five hostages over the course of the past week. The guerrilla group is expected to release its final political hostage as we go to press. It will then have only 22 hostages - all members of the security forces - it classifies as 'exchangeable'. While some Farc guerrillas were involved in the hostage releases, others were preparing two bomb explosions, which took place in the space of six days in Bogotá and Cali: they might symbolise a tactical switch away from kidnapping to a strategic bombing offensive.
