CARIBBEAN POINTERS

* WARNER GOES INDEPENDENT. Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has set 29 July as the date for the Chaguanas West by-election. The election has become necessary because of the resignation in April of former National Security Minister Jack Warner. Warner is to contest the election under the banner of his new Independent Liberal Party (ILP), standing against the United National Congress (UNC), of which he was chairman and for which he won the constituency in May 2010. He had to resign his cabinet post, and chose to resign his parliamentary seat, following the publication of a report alleging corruption during his time as head of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf).
