CHILE: Drawing the battle lines

Former president Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010) and her rival for the presidency, Pablo Longueira, fired the opening salvoes this week in the campaign leading up to November’s elections. Bachelet promised tax and education reform, and a new constitution, but above all she said the political system had to heed the voice of the people and change. In an indirect response, Longueira cautioned against irresponsibly raising expectations.
