The victory of the ruling Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) in
the municipal elections in San Salvador has catapulted the party's presidential
candidate, Rodrigo Avila, into contention, according to one of two opinion polls
released this week. The other poll suggests it had a negligible impact on the
presidential race and that Mauricio Funes, the candidate for the left-wing
opposition Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), retains a
significant lead ahead of the 15 March contest. Several factors suggest the
