In Brief – Costa Rica, El Salvador

ECONOMY | EU Association Agreement delayed in Costa Rica and El Salvador. On 26 July El Salvador’s economy ministry announced that the association agreement between the European Union (EU) and Central America would not take effect as planned on 1 August in El Salvador and Costa Rica. According to the statement, the delay in El Salvador owes to objections raised by Italy over the labelling of five types of cheeses and a type of ham. On 24 August, Costa Rica’s deputy minister for trade (Comex), Fernando Ocampo, announced that the delay could last up to two months over Italian objections, on Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) grounds, to Costa Rica’s labelling of four of cheeses as Provolone Valpadana, Fontina, Gorgonzola and Parmigiano Reggiano. El Salvador was the last of the six Central American countries to ratify the association agreement, on 5 July.
