POLITICS | Senator convicted. On 8 August Brazil’s supreme court (STF) convicted Ivo Cassol, a senator for the centre right Partido Progresista (PP) of corruption and sentenced him to four years and eight months detention in a semi-open prison. Cassol, who was also ordered to pay a fine of R$201,000 (US$88,000), is the first senator ever to be convicted in Brazil. The case involves fraud in relation to the awarding of contracts which took place while Cassol was mayor of Rolim de Moura, Rondônia in 1998-2002. Also convicted of the same crimes were Salomão da Silveira and Erodi Antonio Matt, the president and vice-president respectively of the local government committee in charge of handing out contracts.
