In Brief – El Salvador

POLITICS | New foreign minister. On 14 August President Mauricio Funes swore in Jaime Miranda, his deputy minister of cooperation for development, as his new foreign minister in replacement of Hugo Martínez, who stepped down to take up the position of general secretary of the Central American integration system (SICA). Miranda has been acting foreign minister since 27 June, when Martínez first accepted his new post. Yesterday Funes also swore in Javier Martínez as his new deputy minister for justice & security. Martínez replaces Douglas Moreno, who stepped down in June after his wife accused him of domestic violence. A member of the ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), Martínez was the departmental governor of Cuscatlán and previously served as mayor of Suchitoto (2006-2012).
