URUGUAY: Shootout prompts protest march

Uruguay’s interior minister Eduardo Bonomi has come under fresh pressure after a gunfight on a busy street in broad daylight in central Montevideo claimed the life of a police officer. Uruguayans staged a march on 9 August condemning mounting insecurity, the main public concern, and demanding that Bonomi should go for failing to get a grip on the situation. Opposition politicians echoed this call. Some of the protesters even called for the military to be put on the streets. Meanwhile, the ombudsman issued an unprecedented warning about “levels of violence” in Uruguay.
