Uruguay’s interior minister Eduardo Bonomi has come under fresh pressure after a gunfight on a busy street in broad daylight in central Montevideo claimed the life of a police officer. Uruguayans staged a march on 9 August condemning mounting insecurity, the main public concern, and demanding that Bonomi should go for failing to get a grip on the situation. Opposition politicians echoed this call. Some of the protesters even called for the military to be put on the streets.
