BOLIVIA: Morales further broadens role of military

“A strategic alliance with social organisations” is how Edwin de la Fuente, the commander-in-chief of Bolivia’s armed forces (FFAA), is describing the Comités de Defensa Patriótica (patriotic defence committees). The new entities were unveiled to mark the 188th anniversary of the FFAA’s establishment, as part of Bolivia’s new military strategy, generating familiar concerns regarding the institution’s independence.
