PERU: Humala confronts huge popularity slump

President Ollanta Humala’s approval rating has tumbled for the sixth straight month, hitting a fresh low of just 29%. This is a figure more commonly associated with recent Peruvian heads of state than the ‘elevated’ popularity of around 50% he enjoyed only in April, but the speed of the decline is a serious cause for concern for Humala. The announcement by his prime minister, Juan Jiménez, that the government is inviting all political parties to participate in talks, looks like a slightly desperate attempt to try and halt the slide as well as being an indirect acknowledgement of its poor handling of inter-party relations.
