Venezuelan congress sails close to the wind

Wrapped in the rainbow flag associated with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro last week denied that his government was homophobic, saying that such allegations were “a manipulation”. “It doesn’t matter [as long as] you are an honest person,” he declared. Yet members of the LGBT community might be forgiven for having some doubts about the government’s attitude in light of the latest attacks on the opposition, which saw the president of the national assembly, Diosdado Cabello, and ruling party deputies, launch a tirade, laced with homophobic insults, against the opposition leader and governor of Miranda state, Henrique Capriles Radonski, and his chief of staff Oscar López Colina.
