MEXICO: Battle lines drawn over energy reform

The permanent political commission of the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) approved a statement this week offering unequivocal support for President Enrique Peña Nieto’s seminal energy reform proposal. Meanwhile, the left-wing opposition Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) is planning demonstrations in preparation for a national consultation on the matter on 25 August. It presented its own proposal for energy reform this week, emphatically rejecting the need for constitutional reform to allow private investment in the oil industry.
